Hairspray inspired print

There is a screen printing company in Dublin called Damn Fine Print. In 2016, they ran an event where they were looking for images based on films. They ran a competition and picked 25 works that were screenprinted and sold. The rule was that you couldn't use the name of the film in the image. Here is the submission I made- it wasn't picked but I thought that I would share here.
I felt that there were a few films that would probably inspire a few submissions such as Back to the Future or Star Wars. I felt that I wanted to do something a little different so the film that I chose to represent was the 2007 version of Hairspray. For those of you who don't know, it is a musical based on a film of the same name made in the 1980's. It is set in the 1960's in Baltimore when there was a lot of racial segregation. In the film there are supporting characters Penny ( a white girl) and Seaweed ( a black boy) who fall in love and there is a line in the film where Penny says " I am now a checkerboard chick". That was the inspiration for my idea. I used adobe capture on a family photo from the 1960's to create the girl and found a font that was similar to some that would have been around at the time.
